VGEA Courts a Living Link to Vietnam-China History as It Pitches New Cross-Border Wholesale Hubs

Hanoi, 24 July 2025 — The Vietnam Global E-commerce Association (VGEA) hosted 93-year-old Hoàng Quần — famed interpreter for Chairman Hồ Chí Minh, Chairman Mao Zedong, Premier Zhou Enlai and Prime Minister Phạm Văn Đồng — in a meeting that blended nostalgia with hard-nosed trade plans.

What was tabled

  • National distribution markets. VGEA laid out its blueprint for a string of official wholesale centres that would move bulk Chinese goods into Vietnam via regulated, tariff-compliant channels.
  • Gateway to Guangdong capital. Impressed by the proposal, Mr Hoàng pledged to rally major enterprises from Guangdong to provide financing, logistics know-how and initial inventory.
  • Heritage meets commerce. The Association framed the partnership as a modern expression of the historic camaraderie captured in 1950s photos of Hồ Chí Minh and Zhou Enlai shoulder to shoulder.

Why it matters

  1. Cleaner supply chains: Direct, sanctioned imports promise quicker customs clearance and stronger IP protection — a pain-point for both Vietnamese retailers and Chinese manufacturers.
  2. Scale advantage: Guangdong’s industrial depth could slash per-unit costs for Vietnamese e-commerce sellers, widening margins in a fiercely competitive market.
  3. Soft-power dividend: Showcasing a revered figure like Mr Hoàng in a forward-looking trade deal underscores the “comrades and brothers” ethos Hồ Chí Minh once championed, now applied to digital-age commerce.

Next steps

VGEA and Mr Hoàng’s Guangdong contacts will convene a feasibility team in August. Site assessments for the first two distribution hubs — one in the north near Lạng Sơn, another in the south around Bình Dương — are slated for Q4. A memorandum of cooperation is expected before Lunar New Year.

“History teaches us the value of trust,” Mr Hoàng said. “If we build on that trust with transparent trade, both nations will prosper.”

VGEA leadership says the project could be operational within 18 months, positioning Vietnam as a prime conduit for high-volume, legitimately sourced Chinese goods across Southeast Asia.
